So called because animal power rotates the millstone. It was usually a donkey or a mule. The animal moved around the mill starting the millstones mechanism to grind the grain. Their use in Baleares can be traced up to 1350. This mill, basically domestic, was widely used. Although it is true that their output doesn't equal watermills or windmills, they were complementary to those as they could grind any time.
